| B-LVhuybens Gradual for Augustinian nuns |
Graduale, early 16th century (or perhaps late 15th?), paper. The
sequentiae are not gathered in the back part of the book, but
inserted in the Graduale.
Incomplete: first leaves are missing,
then fols. 13-14, lacuna, fols. 76 ff (Good Friday).
Hufnagelschrift on red staves.
Fol. 13 displays a note in a modern handwriting: Augustinessen tussen Grave en Den Bosch. Begin 16e eeuw, probably entered by the book seller in the 1990's; this is the only indication for an origin near 's Hertogenbosch; however it seems to come from to the diocese of Utrecht (see below). It was bought by Gilbert Huybens in 1997.
An extra gathering, written in the same hand, doubles some chants of the manuscript, e.g. the sequentia Lauda Sion. Hence we may conclude that the book formed part of a pair, each for one choir half.
Some rubrics are in Dutch (e.g on fol. 77r for the Agyos on Good Friday). On fol. 82v the cantrix is mentioned: Hier beghijnt die cantersse tot t'missen. The mentioning of the cantrix, together with the feast for St Augustinus, celebrated with a full mass, including the sequentia Interni festi gaudia (fol. 149r) and an octave (fol. 152v), points towards a house of Augustinian nuns.
Saints, honoured with a mass composed of Commons chants but no
sequentia: (among others) Barbara (fol. 129v),
Vincentius (fol. 134r), Odulphus
(fol. 140v), Lebuinus (fol. 143r), Fredericus episc. (fol. 146r), Egidius abbot (fol. 152v),
Lambertus (1fol. 56v), Willibrordus (fol. 159r). Most of these saints point to the diocese of
Utrecht.
Some saints that are characteristic for the
diocese of Luik, such as Hubertus and
Theodardus are missing.
