Carolus Magnus (Charlemagne), king and emperor, died 814, main
residence: Aachen; buried in the Dom of
Aachen. Canonized 1165 under Frederik Barbarossa.
Feast: 28 January; translation 29 December and 27 July.
An office for him is preserved in the Aachen antiphoners, e.g. D-AAm G20. A sequentia Urbs aquensis is preserved in D-AAm G13.
Lessons for Matins are in: NL-DHk 71 A 2, Lectionarium-Passionale, Servaaskerk, Maastricht, 15th century.
A planctus at the occasion of his death is written by Columbanus, abbot of St.-Truiden: A solis ortu usque ad occidua (Yearly in: Journal of the Plainsong and Medieval Music Society 1981, p. 15).
