Clarissen

Clarissen or 'Tweede Orde van Franciscus', female order, founded by St Clara, disciple of St. Franciscus, ca second quarter 13th century. Several kinds of Clarissen can be discerned:

* Rijke Claren or Urbanisten, following the rule formulated by Pope Urbanus IV in 1263; their monasteries were allowed to own properties, in contrast to the ideas of St Clara herself
* Clarissae or 'ghereformeerde clarissen', observing either the rule of pope Urbanus IV or the rule of St Clara, and in addition comments of Johannes of Capistrania of 1445
* Clarissen-Coletinen, Clarissae pauperes or Arme Claren, observing the rule of Clara with the consuetudines of Coleta (since the 15th century)
* Capucinessen
