A fishermen's village in the early 13th century, a city ca 1300. From 1327 onwards property of the counts of Holland.
From 1578 onwards the town adhered to the protestant religion. In this period it underwent a rapid expansion, because many protestants fled to there from the catholic south.
Patron saint of the city: Nicolas.
