Agnes & Agnetis Translatio

Agnes was a Roman virgin martyr who lived in the 4th century.
Feasts: natalis: 21 January; Agnes secundo: 28 January; translation: 2 September (diocese of Utrecht).

Patrocinium

Many convents of tertiaries were dedicated to Agnes.

Chants

Sequences for Agnes can be found in NL-Uc BMH 21 of the Agnesklooster at Hoorn.

The prosula Eve genus inops et indigum for Agnes is in B-TO 64, fol. 147v, added by a younger hand, to resp. Mel et lac at the end of Matins elsewhere in the manuscript.

Agnetis Translatio

The only chant for Agnetis Translatio known to me is the sequentia Agno Dei jubilemus (AH 55, nr 52, pp. 64-65). It is preserved in a few manuscripts, among which some Dutch; so perhaps it is a Dutch composition. Text and music are preserved in the Gradual NL-Uc BMH 20, once belonging to the Agnesklooster at Amsterdam, on f. 245. This is probably the only manuscript source with music of this sequentia; perhaps there are some printed books. Text only is preserved in NL-Uu 38 (see f. 53 ff for an Agnes passion, followed by some hymns and the sequentia text).
