Steenbergen

Small town north-west of Roosendaal. Its medieval parish church was dedicated to Jacobus Major. In the late 13th or early 14th century this was a large gothic church. It was enlarged ca 1510 by the architect Rombout Keldermans and had at that time ca 20 altars. In 1590 the church fell in the hands of the protestants.

A new parish was founded in 1679-1680, and new a church was built (at first in a barn). A different saint was chosen as patron, probably because the old church still existed, and there still was some hope to get it back. The new church was dedicated to Gummarus.
