Chapter church. Although a chapel had existed in Antwerpen from the 9th (?) century onwards, the chapter was only founded as late as in the 12th century. The first canons came from the Michielskerk that was transformed into a premonstratensian abbey.
The enormous gothic church was built between 1352 and 1533. It was raised to the rank of cathedral in 1559.
Although it was a large and important church, only few of its manuscripts have survived, so that the chant tradition of this church cannot be reconstructed without many gaps.
