The CANTUS analysis scripts!

On this web site you will find some tools that facilitate the handling of the inventory files of CANTUS. A Database for Latin Ecclesiastical Chant. Indices of chants in selected manuscripts and early printed sources of the liturgical Office. These files form an important research tool for the repertory of the Divine Office. For information on the CANTUS project, we refer to the CANTUS Home Page , University of Western Ontario (Canada).

We have been working on these scripts since spring 1997. At that time we realized that, though word processors and database programs are of some use, it should be possible to find better ways to search, analyse and compare electronic files like those from CANTUS.

These tools may function as a heuristic tool in in-depth research on the office repertoire, especially on its vieux fonds. They may help reveiling irregularities in modal and textual characteristics, and serve as a path finder for the researcher.
