Huijbergen: Monasterium beatae Mariae

Gulielmite monastery, founded 1278 by the Lord of Breda, populated with monks from Baseldonck. No scriptorium is known from Huijbergen; the monks occupied themselves mostly with spiritual care.

After the Gulielmite community was disbanded around the mid 19th century, the monastery was taken over by the Instituut Ste. Marie in Huijbergen (or Broeders van Huijbergen, founded 1854). In 1944 the buildings were destroyed; only the gate house remained intact.

The building at present (NL-HUIJBwm)

At present the gate house of the former monastery serves as a Wilhelmietenmuseum and archive. A missal from Baseldonck and some small fragments of liturgical manuscripts (less than a folium) are preserved here.
