Middelburg: Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Abdij

Premonstratensian abbey in Middelburg, founded 1127 by the Michielsabdij in Antwerpen. Ca 1150 the abbey moved to the former carolingian fortress in the centre of the town.

Later on the abbey received the patronage of Nicolas as well, who was patron saint of the merchants (and hence of most of the Middelburg citizens).

In 1574 the abbey fell in hands of the protestants.
