Thorn: Rijksabdij

Founded as a benedictine nun's abbey in the late 10th century by count Ansfried and his wife Hereswint (or Hilsondis); secular stift ('hoogadellijke rijksabdij') since the 12th century. The chapter was formed by 20 canonesses (during its most thriving period) and four to six canons.

The chapter was disbanded in 1797; the church is now functioning as parish church.
